I saw the author on MSNBC and the thing that sent chills down my spine was the fact that my family has always celebrated our light skin as if it were a badge of honor. It is a sick testament to our history to think that a visual manifestation of rape and depravity also carried with it privilege and admiration until very recently. The lighter the skin, the more depraved our ancestors. Wow.
